Elsfield Manor, Oxford.

14th February, 1933

John Edgar, Esq., Crichton Royal, Dumfries.

My dear John,

I have been making enquiries about a place called the Warneford on Headington Hill, Oxford. It is run by some Scots doctors, and is well endowed, and my reports are that it is extremely comfortable and well-managed. The maximum charge is £4 10s. a week, but you can get good quarters at much less than that. The food is said to be excellent.

If you were there you would be near me, and we could do something to cheer you up. How do the terms compare with the Crichton? I wonder if it is not worth while your thinking seriously about this place? The atmosphere of the Crichton is enough to drive anybody to desperation, and that of the Warneford is quite different.

I had a long letter from Johnnie Jameson after he saw you last. It is a great grief to me that I am so far away from your. Johnnie tells me that he finds that you cannot read. Is that so, and is it no use my sending you books?

We all send our love.

Yours ever,

John Buchan
