St. Stephen's House,
London, S.W.1.
1st March, 1933
My own darling
I was so glad to get your postcard last night. I do
hope you will enjoy yourself at your school, and not catch cold.
We had the most pathetic deputation from the acting profession
at the House yesterday afternoon - Dame Madge Kendal,
Julia Neilson, Owen Nares, etc. These poor actors are really on
their beam ends, and they are pleading for a relaxation of the
Entertainment Tax on theatres. I quite agree with them and shall
do all I can. They are a most pathetic people.
I dined at the Club, and went to Nancy's for half an
hour. I saw Hilda and Arthur, and Dougie, and Violent Markham,
and young Lady Leconfield (who said that the Marlborough dance
was the most macabre thing she had ever been to). [ST: Lady Londonderry] Circe poured
her troubles into my ears. She seems to be at war with the whole
world from the Queen downwards; but she made £8,000 at her film
show yesterday.
Today I have got to take the Chair at an address on the
Irish Election at Sir John Barran's house.
The Byngs have asked us to dine on Wednesday, March 22nd.
I have accepted for myself, and said I would consult you. Will
you write direct. Their address is 4 Bryanston Square.
I enclose a communication from K. Tennant.
The situation in Germany is really terrible at the moment.
The Nazis seem to be trying to work up a St. Bartholomew of
