life of Montrose - and how glad I am that I am closely connected (on my Father's side) with those Atholl Highlanders, who were loyal, from beginning to end, to Montrose and to the Royal Standard in Scotland.

THE SCOTTISH WAR MEMORIAL.

Scotland: whose warrior-sons in stubborn fight Not even Roman Legions in their pride, (Bearing the Roman Eagles far and wide) Could conquer; thine has justly been the right To shew to other nations - by the light Of Genius - how to honour those who died , Say rather, those who Death himself defied, And dying, live, beyond our mortal sight.

Memorials of thy Sons, and daughters too , Of humble beast and bird; of all who gave Their lives in service, other lives to save, (Love prompting them, no thought for self they knew) Graven in these majestic shrines are found, Tread softly, Stranger! this is holy ground!
