Dear Buchan,

I should very much like to attend the Meeting of the NATIONAL BOOK TRADE PROVIDENT SOCIETY, but I am writing the next two Volumes of my Memoirs against time, and have to deliver the MSS. early in the spring. I am therefore cutting off all my meetings. Moreover at the beginning of the year I am clearing off to Italy in order to get on with my work without interruption , and I doubt whether I shall be back by the 5th. February. I am sorry I cannot manage it this time.
