E. Pound Rapallo via Marsala 12-5

18 March [1934]

Dear John Buchan

Jock Ritchie has spent the morning telling me that you are very great pot indeed (Ld. High Admiral of the Free Kirk (or the other one) etc.) and that you are much too conservative etc.etc. to commit yourself.

NEVERTHELESS, things are sufficiently tangled to make it nearly a duty for honest men to try to find out what, if anything, they are agreed on/ for example I wd. like to draw you as to WHICH of Doug's premises you grant.

(acc/ my last note in New Democracy) Everybody knows that the asses in all parties disagree. I have just had a magnificent description of five members of Roosevelt's Business Advisory committee meeting before the main assembly. I mean from the only intelligent one of the five.).

France is getting what she deserved/ BUT ought to serve as warning. I mean WHEN the press gets as rotten as we know the French was# (and as part of the British Press most certainly NOW IS....)

there remains no honest parliament, I mean in the general sense, of consultation between the intelligent members of the nation (whether elected or private).

I checked up on "Mercanti di Cannoni", figures of direct pay of Comité des Forges (Protot, DeWendel; Schneiders) to Temps, Debats, Echo... vide Canto 38)

and from the other way on (via yr/ Ch/ of Cmrc)

[# Raffalo vitch papers which also mention Times & Telegraph]

FOUR Paris papers not under DIRECT dictation from the damndest scoundrels out of England. You've got some downy birds in yr/ island. I naturally hope the connection of airplane shares and THAT kind of patriotism & press will be proved....

But at any rate / ANY country needs at least an honest CORNER in the press.

What I wd/ LIKE ; wd/ be a "convegno"/ or some place where the honest searchers cd/ state their real belief. re/ specificly ECONOMICS.

I shd/ be personally grateful for a list of decent British Economists/ my own is very short

Blackett, Soddy, Douglas, Orage, (Kitson, a bit old but honest). McNair Wilson.

and that chap who wrote about Bank Unveiled. ///

A man responsible for the style of Daily Mail's prose, must be a sink of unfathomable corruption. That can stand as purely literary criticism. ////

Apart from this main issue / the general mental life of the country NEEDS the leven of a little lsane curiosity, which wd/ imply among other things a translation of Leo Frobenius, the only living

German whose mind is of any real interest (don't matter whether he is "right" or "wrong" in a particular detail or even in a general question. The mind is alive. ///

Doc. Whittaker's edtn of Bill Young, is getting its publicity via the back door. (vide enc// with 9 or more italian press notices to date. Ox/ Press did it in 1930 and B.B.C. hasn't yet broadcast it. which is a scandal I mean that it shd/ need a group of damnd yanks, plus a bosche pyanist and a few wops, to "ressurrect" one of Eng's gtst. composers.

Of course it makes it all the more fun...for us.

Have you any means of seeing Senator Cutting's speech (U.S. Senate Jan 29?
