St. Stephen's House, London, S.W.1.

5th June, 1934

My own darling

I have just been lunching with Alexander Grant. He says that the muddle about Addison Smith was due to the Committee that passed the Honours, and was caused by the fact that he had pulled too many wires for the same thing. That, however, may be only Ramsay's explanation. He gave me some very interesting and wise advice about how to deal with the P.M. I gather that something is going to happen about him which he could not tell me. He seems to have had a great row with him over the Thistle, and they were not on speaking terms for several days.

It is lovely weather here, but terribly dry. I am just off to a Reuter meeting, and then must make up arrears in the House.

Sir Alexander says that what he heard about the Assembly in the North was nothing but praises of us, notably of you.

You will be terribly sad about Fred's [ST - Oliver's] death. I have just written to Katie. In a way I feel it a mercy. The obituary in "The Times" today was written by me.

Much love. from John
