My own little darling
What a sad world it is! Edward Halifax told me on Tuesday afternoon that Walter [ST: Buchanan] Riddell was not expected to recover . It is a terrible loss, and my heart aches for poor Rachel. I am afraid they will be left very poorly off. I have never known so many friends die in so short a time.
I hope Alastair has not got much of a chill. I am writing to him today.
I cannot get my head raised from this miserable donkey work of the Cromwell index. I must stick at it all day.
I dined with my mother last night, and met Violet Markham, Maudie and Max Moritz Bonn there. We had a very pleasant dinner. Then I went to bed at ten o'clock.
Remind Webb that I will be back tomorrow at 10.15. I have arranged with John Edgar for three o'clock .
Much love.
from John
P.S. I enclose a London Library card. Do please do something about it.
