St. Stephen's House, London, S.W.1.
14th June, 1934.
My dearest Mother
I send you a nice letter from the Moderator.
I got your letter this morning, which I read, I am afraid, with some difficulty. I have nothing to worry about concerning John, except that he is such a bad hand at examinations that I am pretty certain he has not done himself justice. He has all the main requirements for his profession.
Susie, Alice, Brian and I went to Court last night. It is great fun having the Entrée. You go in by a private door and walk straight into the royal circle, and are presented before anybody, except the Ambassadresses. I thoroughly enjoyed it, for I saw an enormous number of old friends.
We had a marvellous debate in the House last night, the best since the Prayer Book. Winston was simply flattened out by John Simon and Hugh Cecil. I have never seen anyone get such a scientific drubbing.
Today I am taking the chair for Sir Oswald Mosley at a luncheon! I have Committees most of the day, including a very important Oxford Elections one, and I am dining with Susie to welcome back Wilfred Thesiger, on behalf of the Oxford Exploration Club.
I hope to get back to Elsfield early tomorrow morning. I am not in the least tired now, and I have got over this terrible index job.
