St. Stephen's House, London, S • W• 1 •

25th April, 1934.

My own little darling

I was delighted to get your letter this morning. It is indeed a grievous business about Johnnie Jameson [ST: his son had died]. I wrote him the best letter I could manage yesterday. But words of consolation are feeble things.

I do hope you are not doing too much in your distressed area. The weather is quite pleasant for April, but still too little rain.

I had an interminable Ashridge Governors' meeting yesterday, and then dined at The Club - one of the best dinners we have ever had - the two Chamberlains, Halifax, Hugh Cecil, Fisher, Stamp, Peacock, Dunedin, etc. I had a very good talk both with Austen and Hugh Cecil. Fisher was very nice about Billie. He said that he impressed the examiners with his ability, and they thought he might do very well at Oxford provided he got over the initial hurdles soon. He says there will be an extraordinarily good lot of freshmen at New College next year.

I am lunching today with Charlie Londonderry. Circe is still in the Shires with a bad cold and will probably not be there.

I have one nice piece of news. Oxford are giving me a D.C.L. at the Encaenia. I hope you get home safely tomorrow. I come down on Friday by the first train.

Much love. from John
