St. Stephen's House, London, S.W.1.

1st May, 1934

My own darling

I hope you got safely back from Cirencester yesterday.

I had Lucy Galloway to tea at the House. She is going to Canada on a short visit, and hopes to see you in Oxford in the autumn. She sent her warmest love to Alice.

The Shoreditch meeting was an astonishing thing - a packed audience, and the most electric one I have ever spoken to. They rose at every point. The whole thing was really very impressive. Joss Wedgwood, Eddie Hartington and I made a funny trio of speakers. Some of the other speeches were in Yiddish.

Then I went to Pratt's with Eddie and ate some devilled kidneys, and had a long discussion with Harold Macmillan. Harold had brought his eldest boy, who is just going up to Eton, to Gladstone's house - a very nice - looking little boy.

I am dining with Gran this evening and going up by the night train to Edinburgh. Tomorrow my address will be the New Club. Expect me at Grosvenor Street on Thursday at 1.15.

Much love. from John
