Dear Mr. Buchan,

You were once charitable enough to say kind things about my literary criticism. Well, I should like to review your book on Cromwell. Unfortunately, I did not notice that it was to appear; indeed I did not know of its existence until I saw it advertised in The Literary Supplement today. Had I known it was coming I would have asked for it at the Times. Now, I can only review it for The Adelphi: which I should like to do.

The trouble - and the cause of this letter - is that your publishers - Hodder & Stoughton - happen to be people who will not send books for review to The Adelphi. Would you mind instructing them to send a review-copy to me at this address?

I am sorry to have to write you: but I should like (1) to read and (2) to criticise what you have said about a man who interests me prodigiously.

Yours sincerely J. Middleton Murry
