Dear Mr. Buchan
It was very nice of you to dedicate the life of Gordon to me and to send me a copy. I had already read it, I thought it excellent and enjoyed it enormously. Did I ever tell you that when in Johannesburg I met a certain Dr. Evans a leading light in Crown Mines? He had been Edgar Vincent's secretary during the eighties when Edgar Vincent was Financial Advisor in Cairo. He had been present at the final meeting of Gordon, my Father, Edgar Vincent & Gen. Stewart before Gordon went

up to Khartoum.
I am working in Barings now, but have only just recovered from a bad attack of dysentery I got in India that laid me up for nearly two months. I wonder if I might come & see you sometime.
My uncle & aunt both ask to be remembered to you - when does Johnnie start for Africa?
Yours sincerely,
Evelyn Baring.
