Fairnilee, Galashiels.

24th September 1934.

Dear Buchan,

The late Principal Alexander Whyte used to say ''If you like a book write to the Author." I am under a great obligation to you for two books which have made my tiresome illness less intolerable. One is your "Cromwell" which I have just finished. You must be tired hearing its praises. It certainly has given me a personal liking for Cromwell which I never was able to attain to before reading it.

The second is your "Glencoe". Simon, who was here a short time ago, put me on to it. What struck him most about it was, he said, the restraint with which it was written. If I may say so, the clear masculine English of both books makes them a joy to read.

Sincerely yours,

A Shaw
