St. Stephen's House, London, S.W.1.

17th July, 1934.

My own little darling

Yesterday afternoon I went to Cook's and got Johnnie's tickets. I wrote to him about the whole situation yesterday. The train does not leave on Friday until 2 p.m., so I can give him luncheon and see him off. That will get me back in the car to Elsfield by tea-time. I am very glad it has worked out this way. Will you remind him to make quite certain about his passport? I cannot remember whether Italy is covered by it. I hope he has got his boat ticket all right from the Crown agents. See that he starts off with at least £30 in cash. He need hardly bother about foreign money, for they tell me he can get change in the restaurant car. He gets his sleeper in Calais.

I dined at the Club last night. We had a dull debate in the House on Walter Elliot's beef subsidy. Noel spoke quite well in winding up.

Today I have a lot of appointments, and shall probably go to see some private films at nine o'clock. It is going to be a hot day, but there is a pleasant breeze.

There is literally no news. It is very sad about the Dean of Christ Church. S.B. was asking me last night who his successor should be, as it is a Crown appointment. I wonder if it would be possible to transfer Cyril Alington from Durham.

I do hope the wee man was safely deposited at Eton yesterday, and that there is better news about Duggie.

Much love. from John
