Dear Mr. Buchan

I have read with mixed feelings the announcement of your appointment as Governor-General. For it must mean that we shall have to find another "Athens". But I am delighted at the great honour that has come to you. To be the King's deputy in the greatest of the Dominions is a high privilege of which any man would be proud; and I know you are worthy of it. I hope that when the time comes for you to enter upon the office you will have the best of good health and that fortune will attend you.

There have been such appointments of which it could be truly said that there was "no damned merit" about them. But, under the new order you go to Canada because Canada wants you - and wants you because you are John Buchan.

With all good wishes,

Yours sincerely

W.W. Hadley
