Somehow, your appointment
gratifies me. In fact, I'm delighted.
May I congratulate you - if you
won't object to a Red doing it?

It is an age ago since I
wanted to be a Factor at Fort Resolution
(or thereabouts) through reading Ballantyne's
first book. But the H.B.C. wouldn't
have me. Yet Rupert's Land fascinates
me still, though I've never seen it.
I feel it appropriate that you should be
its august Governor.
