My dear John
It is not often that the papers contain good news now-a-days, but the announcement in this morning's Times of your appointment as Governor General of Canada is really glorious. You will, I'm sure, earn high distinction as one of our great pro-consuls & carry on nobly the Milner tradition in which the

Kindergarten was brought up. My mind is carried back as I write to the far-off days of the 'Generies' and Land Settlement & repatriation & J.h.burg drains & all the other problems which we tackled with so much light-hearted enthusiasm. We have travelled many a league since then but the light, I know, burns as brightly in you as ever & you will prove yourself, as Lord Milner did, a great servant of the Empire.
Susie, too, will be quite splendid. I can't imagine a better combination.
Bless you both,
Ever yrs
