I'm delighted about Canada, and confident that you will make a great success of your term of office.

The only thing your friends can have against the appointment is that it will take you from them for too long. But 5 years so busily spent soon pass.

I once heard a returned proconsul

addressed this wish in the Carlton Club: "Hello! Eddy - seems an age since I saw you. Where have you been?"! I could never make out whether the thing was done on purpose.
