Dear John Buchan
I must write you one little word of pride, delight and hopes upon this apotheoris of yours; 'my godfther, the Governor-General of Canada; sounds so well! Canada is in a sad way, and I am glad they are going to have you to cheer them up. We are hard at work here making clothes for the starving western farmers and their families! I do not like to think of Elsfield shut up; its hospitable Sundays will be sadly missed by Oxford people. But you will return, covered with glory. I trust you will not have to be made a Lord, but I am told Canadians are frightful snobs.
Please give my love to Mrs. Buchan, I had lunch with her mother last Friday: she was so kind.
Ever with love, Mary
P.S. John is now rector-designate of Fallowfield, Manchester
