Dear John Buchan

If you will forgive the presumption of writing familiarly. May I say I was delighted when I read of your great and honourable elevation to the Rank of Governor General. And particularly to that of Canada.

One got so used to seeing you about the House that

One assumed you would always be there.

And frankly I am sorry you are going: but I do wish they would make an exception in your case & let you come back again some day. For it is the presence of the rare man like yourself that occasionally makes one draw a deep breath in the House of Commons and say "We are really somebody here old fellow". Honour to the Government for having the good sense to honour itself & the nation by your appointment. I could almost forgive the National Gov. its sins
