23rd March, 1936.

John Stainer, Esq., Magdalen College, Oxford, England.

Dear Mr. Stainer,

I have your 1etter of 12th March, and am greatly interested in your expedition. Since I came here I have been seeing all the people connected with the unexplored North, and have had most interesting talks with them.

I doubt whether the Canadian Government would be able to give you any assistance, for they are not very well off at the moment, and there is a good deal of local exploration work which wants financing. Besides, would not you be operating in that part of Labrador which belongs to Newfoundland?

If the Oxford University Exploration Club makes yours an official expedition, perhaps you will write to me and I will see if anything can be done to help you in the way of transport. I will be delighted to welcome your reconnaissance party if they come here. I shall be in Ottawa until the end of May; at Quebec during the month of June; and in the Maritime provinces in July.

Yours sincerely,
