The 22nd Regiment.

In the permanent defence force of Canada your famous regiment represents especia ly the French people. The French of Canada have a great military record. Until two centuries ago they defended the land they had won against the attacks of savage tribes, and they carried the flag of France into the remotest places. Britain in her long history never made a more gallant or more skilful antagonist than the great Montcalm. After Canada came under her sovereignty, the French people accepted a new allegiance, and proved their loyalty on many occasions, as when they repulsed the attack of Montgomery and Arnold on Quebec, and in 1813 under de Salbury drove back the American invasion. In the last century they have proved the ir quality in Britain's wars, and not least in the Great War. Gentlemen, you have a proud tradition behind you, the tradition of France and the tradition of Britain. Keep both in mind, for on these two traditions depends the future of civilisation.
