Dear Lord Tweedsmuir,

I am sending you a copy of my new book and shall be very pleased if you will accept it. It is a very short essay in a period in which I am the rawest amateur, + its only excuse is that no one seems to have given much attention to the subject before, and I hope my attempt may help to attract interest to a very important part of the history of Scotland. The book was published this week + is getting quite good notices.

I feel I should apologise for troubling anyone so busy as you must be with such a present, but the book, if you do read it, is too short to take up very much of your time!

Yours very sincerely, James Fergusson.
