My own dearest mother
I was greatly saddened yesterday morning to get the news of Sir Alexander Grant's death. I wired to Lady Grant & also to Walter about a wreath. I never had a kinder friend or one I liked better. He was over 70, & hadn't been very well for some time. Ramsay Macdonald will be inconsolable.

pleasant I found the cities of Galt, Brantford & Guelph. I visited and addressed the Mohawk Indians in their Reserve, and spent a most interesting afternoon yesterday at the great Guelph Agricultural College. As usual I found all kind of links with home - a Walker from Peebles whom Aunt Jean had taught in the Sunday School, a Miss Younger from Innerleithen who had been in my Women's

Committee there when I was candidate, and a granddaughter of Alec Bathgate!
I got a big home mail last night, mostly letters of congratulation on my Privy Councillorship. I had one from you & one from Nan. I am so glad you are all settled at home again and I do hope you will have a good summer. I am vexed about Nan's chill. John writes in very good spirits. I hope you will see a lot of the old man. The children seem to have enjoyed the Coronation.

Susie was amused to find her words quoted by our Canadian Speaker at the great Westminster Hall banquet. It shows the reputation she has got here.
May 23rd We have had rather mixed weather, & to day it is misty and overcast. I do hope it will clear up for our carriage procession to the races. I am just starting off to open a new hospital.
Later
The new hospital - a convalescent home 30 miles out in the country - was very good. I am much struck by the faces of the sisters (an anglican sisterhood).

We lunched with the Hunt Club, and then drove in state with four horses, outriders, and an escort of my Horse Guards, on to the race-course, just as the King does at Ascot. There were above 20,000 people. The races were very simple & innocent; no bookmakers are allowed. Susie presented the King's Plate. We are dining with the Jockey Club, and then go on to Gananoque on the St Laurence, where to-morrow I
