an address and testimonial, together with a cheque for $1000. Considerable additions were made to the Library during this Session. The Principal had intimated the previous April, that $2000 for six years was necessary to set the Library on a satisfactory basis, and in response to his appeal for funds, $1000 was contributed during the winter of 1881-82, $500 being donated by Mr. Allan Gilmour of Ottawa to whose generosity the University had again and again been indebted. In the Museum a good deal of work was done during the summer, particularly in the Conchological and Botanical Departments, and many valuable contributions were received, including a fine collection of Chinese articles from Formosa, presented by Rev. Dr. Mackay. For several years considerable inconvenience had been felt in connection with the use of the Observatory in the City Park, the proceedings of those engaged in observation, being continually interrupted by the crowds frequenting the Park, particularly during the summer evenings. It was therefore resolved to apply to the City Council for leave to remove the instruments to a building more conveniently placed in the College grounds. The Corporation agreed to the request and a small Observatory

building was erected in the rear of the College, to which the instruments were transferred, under the charge of Dr. Williamson. The question of affiliation of Ladies Colleges was at this meeting brought before the Board, and it was decided that it should be referred to the Senate to consider the subject and to report what brances of study would be most useful for ladies seeking a liberal education, and if it was thought advisable to prepare a draft of curriculum for them. A committee was also appointed, consisting of Dr. Bell, the Principal Dr. Hardrope, and the Hon. A. Morris to confer with the managing Board of teachers of Ladies' Colleges as to terms of affiliation with the University which might be mutually satisfactory, and to report at the next meeting of the Board. It was decided that the salary of Rev. J. Fowler should be fixed at the rate of $1000 per annum, and that the salary of the Secretary-Treasurer should be $750 per annum. The Rev. Robert Campbell of Renfrew was appointed for the ensuing session as Lecturer on political Economy, the Rev. Donald Ross Lecturer on Apologetics, and the Rev. James Carmichael of King Lecturer on Church History. The following honorary degrees were

a special meeting of the Board in September.

The Library received again this year valuable gifts of books. The Library itself has been much improved by the allerations of the past summer, but it was found that it had been necessary to make further changes in the management. The increasing duties of the Registrar made it difficult for him to combine them with those of Librarian, and it was therefore divided at the April meeting of Trustees to relieve Dr. Bell of his duties as Librarian. This post was conferred on Mr. Adam Shortt, his salary being increased to $1000 a year, with the understanding that he should during the summer make a complete catalgue of the books in the Library. Dr. Bell continuing at his former salary as Registrar.

The Museum also was greatly enriched during this winter by many and valuable contributions, including a large collection of skins of birdsand mammals from Hudson's Bay, and many fine specimens in the Geological Department.

The Principal had also secured a number of contributions during his trip round the world. Additional grants were made by the Trustees both to the Library and Museum.

The Chancellor announced in his annual address at Convocation that on the determination of the Trustees to issue a Domesday Book the work had been begun by Dr. Williamson, who had already collected much material for it and had consented to write the annals of the College.
