Summary: Lucy (Newton) Grace was the “widow” of John Gray who applied for a pension. She and John had no children together and were married on March 15, 1859. Lucy claimed that she and John were married by Phil Alexander.She said that John sent her three letters while he was away, but did not mention what regiment or company he was in. Lucy knew nothing about John’s enlistment. Milford Smith was the first affiant to declare that Lucy was not the widow of John Gray. John was no older than 18 years of age when he was drafted, he was not allowed to leave the farm at night, was never married, nor did he ever live with a woman. His parents were William and Caroline Gray, John’s family and witnesses were all owned by the same enslaver, Daniel Brauhman; all were residents of Louisville, Kentucky. John Gray also went by the name of John “Nelson,” he was enrolled and mustered on September 18, 1864 at Louisville, Kentucky, in Co. L, 5th Regiment of USCC. John died on November 10, 1964, at Bowling Green, Kentucky of Typhoid Fever. Depositions from: Millford Smith on pages 30-32, Washington and Harriet Dupey on page 32-34, and Harvey M.
