94 Ordinances of the City of Greenville.

AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE STREET RAILWAY
COMPANY, OF GREENVILLE, TO BUILD AND OPERATE
AN ELECTRIC RAILWAY IN THE STREETS OF SAID CITY.

Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the City of Greenville, and by the authority of the
same, That the Street Railway Comany of the City of
Greenveill be, and is hereby , authroized subject to the
conditions and limitatins hereinafter mentioned, to
construct an electric street railway in the said City, to
lay and build the track thereof along any and all streets
and over any and all bridges, and to run by means of
electricty freight and passenger cars over the sai rail-
way for a period of thirty-seven years from the passage
of this ordinance.

SEC. 2. That in constructing the said railway the rias
shall be laid so that they shall be on a level with the
surrounding surface, and that in maintaining the tracks
and in operating the said railway the Company shall
furnish no greater obstacle than necessary to the free
use and enjoyment of the said streeets, The apparatus
used thereon shall be of the latest improvements. Nec-
essary tracks and switches may be laid along any streets
within the City limits.

SEC. 3. That the said Railway Company may adopt any
other motive power that may prove itself more efficient
than electricity if the City by ordinance shall agree
thereto.

SEC. 4. That the exclusive privilege of using the streets of
the said City for the purposes mentioned in Seciton 1 is
hereby granted to the said Street Railway Company, its
successors or assigns, for a period of thrity-seven years
from the passage of this ordinance : Provided, That if
at any time after ten years from the passage of this or-
dinance any person or persons shall apply for a fran-
chise to operate a streeet railway over streets not occu-
pied by said Street Railway Company, nor within two
blocks and parallel to any line of said Street Railway
Company, the City Council may give notice to said
