New Zealand.

From far off New Zealand came letters and rocks packed in friend-
liness, tied with good wishes, and prepaid in expense. Masterton, Wel-
lington, and Christ Church all sent us rocks, with wonderful letters.

New Zealand is in the British dominions and led the world in
advanced labor legislations. The islands were captured from the native
Maoris who constituted a very remarkable race. The Maoris now have two representatives in Parliament. The Rotary Club of Nelson sent us a Maori
axe but it was lost when the "Tahati" sank. They are now trying to
secure another for us.

New Zealand is a land of well-governed cities, rich mineral
deposits, agricultural resources, picturesque scenery, and progressive
people. If the response of the Rotary clubs of New Zealand to our request
for rocks is indicative of the entire population, then New Zealand has
generous, unselfish, kindly folks who have a vision of world friendship.

THE GAS-SWEPT SUMMIT OF NGAURUHOE Photograph from the Brett Company, Auckland

In Tongariro National Park, "a gift of burning mountains" made to New Zealand by a Maori chief is Ngauruhoe, the youngest of the dominion's volcanoes. it is a symmetrical cone 7,515 feet hight, with a crest occupied by a spacious crater containing two smaller craters. These vents discharge sulphuric acid fumes with much noise and force.
