I hereby certify that the foregoing bill of sale came into office on the 1st. day of Jan. 1823. Joab Lawler Clk. Cty Court {Joseph Hale To Wm. Elliott Page 27} To all to whom this present bill of sale may come know ye, that I Joseph Hale of Shelby County and State of Alabama, send greeting that for and in consideration of the sub of five hundred dol-- lars to me in hand paid or promised to be paid hath this day granted, bargained & sold unto Wm Elliott of the county and state aforesaid a negro woman named [Carey] of the age of twenty-one a slave to the only proper use and benefit of him the said William Elliott his heirs & assigns for-- ever, and against the lawful claim title and demand of all and every person or persons, shall and will warrant and forever defend In witness whereof the said Joseph Hale hath hereunto set his hand and seal this 28th day of October 1822. Attest John Cary Joseph Hale his mark Ann Hale her mark State of Alabama } Personally appeared before Personally Shelby County } me Joab Lawler clerk of the County Court said county, the aforesaid Joseph Hale who acknowledged he signed, sealed and delivered the foregoing bill of sale of said with-- in named William Elliott on the day & year therein named. Nabors and Martin McLeroy and Greer McLeroy are held and firmly bound unto Israel Pickens Governor of the State of Alabama, his successors in office in the penal sum of two thousand dollars for the payment of which we bind ourselves our heirs,, &c signed & sealed this 31st day of March A. D. 1824. The conditions of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden James M. {Thos. A. Rogers To William Gilbert Page 28} Know all men by these presents that I Thos. A. Rogers of the County of Shelby State of Alabama, have this day bar-- gained, sold unto William Gilbert of the county & state aforesaid a certain Mulatto girl named Lucinda a slave for life for a consideration of the sum of Five hundred and twenty five dollars, and the said Thos. doth war-- rant said slave, to be sane & healthy, and further doth warrant to defend the title of said slave, to the said William Gilbert against the claims of all persons whatsoever.
