Charleston 20 Oct. 1860

Dear Sir,

Your invitation to be present at the laying of the cornerstone of the University of the South dated the 5th of Sept was received on the 30th.

Our Vacation terminated yesterday and today I begin the master Course in our College, and shall be actively employed until Spring with the exception of a few days about Christmas. I shall therefore be obliged to decline accepting the invitation to be present on the 10th.
