It would afford me great pleasure to be present at the laying of the Corner Stone of the principle building of the University of the South. By the date of this, you will see that it is impossible for me to be present, - your invitation of the 3rd Oct. having only reached me by the last mail. Even if I had received your note in time, my engagements here would have prevented my going.--
