My dear young friend

We commence, today our voyage together whether it be a long or short one, may it be for you propitious In the difficulties which lie in our course, resolve firmly not to be conquered by them. Meet them a determined, resolute hear, & a firm hand, & they will yield, tendering to the [illegible] the palm & crown. Let this be your motto;

"Time. Faith. Energy."

These are "sublime gifts", of resistless might. They will conquer everything, & grant to him who adopts them as his watchwords any boon he may ask. Let me recommend the following rules which, if faithfully followed, will ensure success.

1. Have regular & fixed Hours of Study. Never allow them to be interrupted. Mark this! Three hours of solitary study each day for five years, will make any one of only the most ordinary talents an accomplished scholar in any department of Science or Literature which he may select. And remember, further, that he who has perfected himself in one branch of learning as overcome half the obstacles to attaining ^ to some degree % perfection in any other, so closely are they all interlocked & interwoven. All you require is "Time. Faith. Energy".

2. Whatever you undertake. Master it thoroughly. Never be satisfied with only half knowing a thing. Take your [illegible] with a heave lead & long line, & be sure you touch bottom. Never advance one step forward until you feel your foot firm where you stand. Meet every difficulty
