POLK Letters: May 27, 1861

1861, May 27

Bishop Polk (the letter is unsigned and it is incomplete - but apparently it was from the Bishop), Nashville, Tenn., to the Hon. L.P. Walker, Secretary of War, re: the defense of the borders of the Confederate States; stating that Mr. Lincoln's purposes are no longer a matter of doubt; that his line is that of aggression, and if possible, conquest. 1p.

Nashville Tenn: May 27. 1861.

To.

The Hnl. L. P. Walker, Secy of War

Dear Sir,

You will pardon me for addressing you on a subject of the deepest interest to us all in which in my opinion admits of no delay. I refer to the defense of this portion of our border.

The purposes of Mr. Lincoln are now no longer a matter of doubt. His line is that of aggression and if possible conquest. He has stifled Maryland & paralyzed Missouri. His next victim in order is Kentucky. What is to be done?
