ROSS, GALE, & THOMAS,
FIRE, LIFE, RIVER AND RAIL INSURANCE,
NO. 4 MAXWELL HOUSE.
Nashville, Tenn. August 30th, 1876

Dr. H. N. Anderson [?]
Sewanee

Dear Sir -
I have learned in these
last few days that the Board of Trustees, have failed
to confirm the resolution of the Hebdomadal Board
confirming a scholarship upon a member of the family
of Bishop Polk to be appointed by Mrs. Polk, during
her life - a Copy of the Resolution was forwarded
me by the Secretary Col Davis - to be handed to Mrs
Polk, upon the supposition that she was at my house.
But as she was at that time on a visit to New Orleans &
on the eve of her departure for my house - I concluded
to retain the letter & Copy of Resolution, and merely
acquaint her of the fact, which was due - Mrs. Polk
never returned. In the meantime, at the earnest solici-
tation of the Bishop of Tennessee, then staying with me -
I concluded to accept the matter as if decided. So it
was he that it would meet with the approbation of the
Board of Trustees - and to [?] my son at the beginning
of the time, under the provisions of the scholarship as
explained by the Board to me - And hence did not
remit You any more money than enough to pay the
Matriculational & Medical fees - as I think -
