POLK Letters: July 9, 1849

Bishop Polk, La Fourche, La., to his sister, Susan Polk Rayner, re: the terrible epidemic of cholera among his slaves and his family; reporting the loss of 25 children, 29 men, and 16 women; telling of his loss also of 97 slaves on a plantation near Donaldsonville; the departure of Hamilton for New Haven; Mrs. Deveraux's death. 4 pp. ( 1 mss. original copy and 1 typed copy).
