A few days since I had a conversation with Col. Colyar on the subject of The Turnpike from Cowan to the Sewanee site -in which he advocated very strongly the route by Porters Bank road, up Mather's point, or rather point Cham pion (the way we went with D.E) I observed that it might be found to be rather a round about way & should be much longer than by the Cowan & Jasper road, which you know is at the ridge along which the Sewanee RR runs on - perhaps a still shorter route might be had along by V. Hawkins if an easy grade, of most such length be obtained up the slope of the Mountain

in that neighborhood. To which he replied that there could not be found a straight passage in Winchester or its neighborhood & who would subscribe a Dollar toward it if located along other of three routes. And he did not think it was necessary that the Turnpike should start from Cowan, as it was out of the way & not central to the neighborhood which would require it-I then stated that I understood one of the leading objects of having the road was to accommodate travellers arriving by R.R. or otherwise, at hours intervening between the times of connections of the [L&N&C?] trains, as in case of stopping by accident or other cause of the connection & and [?] [?] further details of such like views which I thought I had heard expressed - but which [?] how to [?] Under the circumstances I would proceed with less embarrassment in my examination s if you would
