University Place October 13th 1860

Charles F. Anderson Esq Architect

Dear Sir,

During the late meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of the South, the following Resolution was passed.

"Resolved, That the plans of the Architects be referred to the Executive Committee, who shall hear Architects in explanation of their plans, and be authorized to decide upon some one for which compensation shall be made to the Artist. To carry out the [?] of the advertisement the sum of Four hundred Dollars shall be paid for the plan selected.

I am instructed by the Executive Committee to communicate to you the action of that Committee on this subject in the following Resolutions passed by the Committee on the 13th October 1860, to wit,

“Resolved, That while we express the highest admiration for the perfection of style exhibited in the plan offered by Mr. Lee, and see in several of the others many points of great excellence, the Majority of the Committee deem the plans of Mr. Anderson most in accordance with the designs and purposes of the proposed University.”

That a copy of this Resolution be transmitted by the Secretary to each of the Architects who have been in attendance before the Board”

X In communicating this decision to Mr. Anderson the Committee wish him distinctly to understand that Board gave it no further authority than simply to determine upon the Merits of the designs submitted to its judgment, and according to the advertisement to pay for the one deemed most desirable. The Board expressly reserved to itself the choice of an Architect at some future time.
