Background for Bishop Otey's Letter to The Reverend John Sandels

The Reverend John Sandels first became acquainted with Bishop Otey while he was at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. Mr. Sandels was studying for the Episcopal Ministry and also teaching in the College. Bishop Otey's sons were among his students.

After Mr. Sandels was ordained, he went at Bishop Otey's invitation, to Tennessee. The attached letter was written during this period.

Later Mr. Sandels organized St. John's Parish at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He served as chaplain in the Confederate Army and lived during his latter years in Louisiana.

After his death his widow moved her family to Sewanee in order that the youngest son, Lee Sandels, might enter the University. Lee was graduated about 1879.

W.J. Echols, Jr., now a freshman in the University is John Sandels' great, great grandson.
