Dear Sir

The card of invitation to be present at the most interesting ceremony of laying the corner stone of the new University which you so kindly honored me with, had been forwarded from Augusta Geo. & has reached me only within a day or two, I have just returned from Europe, & shall not be able to return South for a month. If I had been in Georgia I should have made a point of being at Sewanee

on the 10th for beside the great pleasure of meeting so many distinguished & devoted friends of the Church, it would have ever been a satisfaction to have witnessed the laying of the Foundation Stone of a University which I trust is to be an honor not only to the South but to the Union, -- with earnest prayers for your success, most respectfully
