William Morris.

In the enclosed Mem the Governor does not confirm the app't. of Morris as Pilot, but directs that Ja's. Hexton should fill such situation if competent-

This man was sent down to take Command of the Regent bird but it appears that Capt Clunie reinstated the former master, for what reason is not apparent, & gave Hexton another similar berth but with a common seamans pay--

If Hexton takes the berth he was app'd to he will recieve the pay 2/9 a day recom'd for him by Cap Clunie and

and King then would change? places with him there & receive 1/9 - an equitable arrangement apparently as he must have either resigned his Command or been removed from it for a time - Morris a well recommended man could then be Pilot and no addition in the expense of Moreton Bay ^ (would) be incurred -

GJ Hexton is to be Pilot, Morris ought to take his place for 2/9 & King descend as before sug-gested when rate of 1/9 - Either of these alternatives would effect the saving

In Capt Clunies letter of 5 Oct 1831 No. 8 Par 2. - Morris is recommended to the appointment of Pilot [underlined] at Moreton Bay, in the room of Ja's Nelson.

The Master Attendant joins in such recommend= =dation giving Morris a very good character and Cap't Clunie now requests autho-rity to insert his name as Pilot in the salary Abstr. The Pay of the Pilot is £50 [underlined] per an: Connected

[left margin in pencil] Has this been since settled?

[in another hand] MrJ No the appointment requires approval.

32/627 The Governors decision[underlined] I cannot approve of this augmentation to the pay for a seaman - If one 32/5370 can be dispensed with on the appointment of Morris to be Pilot there will be a saving of 1/9 a day affected and

[left side] connected with this matter is the Case of James Hexton who was sent to Moreton Bay on 7 February 1831 to take Command of the cutter Regentbird: It appears however by Capt Clunies letter of 15 Jany 31 No 31/2 Par 3 that he reinstated King in the Command of that Vessel, and as such. he receives 2/9 a day while Hexham[sic] appointed to that duty as above is allowed only 1/9 a day the pay of a Common SeamanCapt Clunie now recom-mends

[right side] and if Capt Clunie finds that he can do with one Seaman less he should not apply to have the vacancy mentioned by Morris pro= =motion filled up. If Capt 31/549 Clunies recommends of this appt. has not in any way been acted upon it could be more proper to appoint Hexham[sic] pilot(if he is fit for it) than to promote Morris.
