Hills Code Vol 1 Page 128, in Section 385,
"ballot, detail as to preparation of, by voter,"
appears the following " He (the elector) shall
prepare his ballot by marking a cross before
or after the name of the person or persons
for whom he intends to vote."

Under the last provision we will
suppose that the elector places a cross
after the republican A. B. and before
the democrat G. H. at the point I have
placed a red ink X in copy of ballot

As the voting mark X is after
the republican A. B. and before the democrat
G. H., it becomes immediately apparent
that under the provisions of Section 385
and election board could not determine
for whom the elector intended to vote
from an examination of a ballot thus
marked.
