Specifications For pumps for the Seattle Fire Boat as built for the fire boats of Chicago and Milwaukee Pumps to be of the Vertical duplex fly wheel type, direct acting Each set with two Steam and Two water cylinders all double acting amd connected with suitable cranks, connecting rods, cross heads and guides. The Columns to be of wrought steel polished, the connecting rods ecentric rods cranks etc. of forged steel. The suction valves for pumps all arranged in a vertical position around the plungers and the water passages to have a straight way. The suction for each set is 14" in Diameter and the suction valves for each end of each pump have an area of 120 square inches. The discharge for each set of pumps is 10" in diameter and the discharge valves are suitably arranged The cylinders are composition lined throughout the outside casting being of cast iron, which is the base or foundation of the working parts. Steam cylinders are arranged on an entablature connected with the base by the six steel columns which secure the guides, pillow the blocks etc, as per drawings the pistons have sectional self acting rings The "D" valves are 75% balanced. The eccentric rods are of composition ald all working parts are polished.

Specifications (continued) The cylinders are lagged and covered with brass nickel plated and secured with bands in a substantial and ornamental manner. The iron in cylinders will be close grained and the valves and pistons different in misture to insure better running and less wear. The general arrangement of design is like blue prints submitted. The throttle will be attached with copper branch pipes with hand wheels all ready for steam pipe to connect upon; the exhaust pipes will also be attached by branch pipes with suitable flange for main pipe. Maine-Two cast iron bends with six hose gatges on each, connected by one 9" and two 7" gates as plans show. Non piping Guages- One water guage attached to each set of pumps and one 12" water guage to be set in engine room when wanted. These pumps will be carefully built and tested here, (Chicago) and when they are started they will be ready for business and hard fire service. They are beyond experiment and fully guarenteed. References The "Chas F Elmes" pumps as herein described are fully guarenteed for fire service on slat water. Cast Iron pumps, lines with suitable bronze composition are used all over the world and are no experiment The "Elmes" pumps are from 3/4' the 1&1/8" thick and about the only pressure on castings is the suction side and that when standing idle. After using a set of fire boat pumps made in Hudson New York Chicago has bought two sets of "Elmes" pumps for the two additional fire boats. The "Elmes" pumps are also used in the fire boat "Cataract' of Milwuakee We would respectfully refer to Mayor D C Creiger or Chief Swenie of Chicago or Mayor Thos H Brown or Chief Foley of Milwaukee.
