To the Hon Mayor
And City Council - Gentlemen
A short time will elapse before the completion of the fire boat. Immediate steps should be taken to provide a suitable station for her when she can be connected with the telephone and fire alarm signals as well as coal and water supply. As the day is not distant when the business portion of the city must be supplied with heavier and more powerful steam fire engines I would suggest that a station for the fire boat be selected at the foot of some street running to the waterfront where an engine house could be built. The advantages of an engine house at the slip where the fire boat is moored are apparent. I feel confident that at no late day the large bell now at the headquarters building

will be taken from there and placed on the waterfront. The additional cost to the tower on head quarters to carry it to a highth where it could be heard in [that?] part of the city north of Madison Street would [go?] far toward building a suitable engine house on the waterfront. It is also time that locations be selected for the four chemical [engines?] soon to arrive. Certain alterations and repairs are necessary for the Main and Battery Street Engine Houses [bids?] for the Main Street House when the repairs are imperative have been [situated?] and are in the hands of your Fire and Water Committee. I would also urge the immediate purchase of the additional hauling horses for the new chemicals house as it takes something over two months to get them after being ordered they should be ordered at once - I would also recommend that a hydrant be set at the corner

of 6th and Pike Street. I would also recommend the building of suitable bins at the several inclines for coal supply for the engines. Heretofore we have had to rely upon forced contributions from the citizens coal bin - and the men necessary to levy such contributions could be employed in regular duty at the front.
Very Respectfully Submitted
