The petitioners spoke of the "numerous recent fires in the part of the city above described" and that they were "feeling our own insecurity in the imminent danger from fire, by reason of the inadequate facilities for extinquishing fires..." Petition.

To the Honorable Common Council of the City of Seattle;

Gentlemen:

Your petitioners, property owners, and business men, whose property and business is in that part of the City of Seattle, bounded by King, Lane, Commercial and South Second streets, would call your honorable body's attention to the fact of the numerous recent fires in the part of the city above described, some of which have, no doubt, been of incendiary origin, and feeling our own insecurity in the imminent danger from fire, by reason of the inadequate facilities for extinguishing fires, as well as the danger to the whole city, we would most respectfully request your honorable body to purchase at least 600 feet of hose and an engine, either chemical or stationary, to be located for use in this part of the city; and also that your petitioners be permitted to organize a volunteer fire company, under the control and direction of the Chief of the Fire Department of the city.

Your petitioners would further most respectfully ask that the portion of commercial

street between Weller and Lane and the portion of Weller street between Commercial and Second be planked and placed in condition for the fire engines and firemen to reach the fires that may occur in this district.

And your petitioners would further pray that your honorable body may act promptly and speedily in the premises, and thereby furnish your petitioners some protection to their property and lives.
