To the Hon. Mayor and Common Council of the City of Seattle:

Gentlemen:- The undersigned, your petitioners residents and property owners on 8th. Street in this City would respectfully represent and state: That they protest against the cutting down and grading of said 8th. Street to a grade with James Street for the following reasons:

First: That James Street has a very steep grade and but little hauling teaming or traveling by teams with loads is had upon that street in consequence of the steep grade and that by grading 8th. Street down to a level with James would be of but very little if any benefit to the public and it would very greatly injure and damage the property of all property owners south of James Street.

Second: That the expense of grading said Street down will be very great and a heavy tax upon the property owners along the line of said Street to pay for such improvements, and in addition thereto, the property owners will be compelled to expend a large sum of money in building walls or other means to prevent the caving in of lots.

Your petitioners would most respectfully and earnestly request and urge that your honorable body will, by proper ordinance cause 8th. Street to be so graded as to require James Street, to be bridged. That by bridging James Street a large sum of money will be saved to the property owners along the line of said Street and the public will be equally if not better accomodated [sic] by such change.
