223 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Mar 12/83

Be it remembered that on this 12th day of March 1883 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to the call of His Honor the Acting Mayor John Collins for the transaction of general business.

The following Officers are present, towit: His Honor the Acting Mayor Councilman John Collins and Councilmen Charles F. Clancy, Fred Gasch, Charles McDonald, G. L. Manning and U. M. Rasin Thereupon the following proceedings are had

Petitions Rec'd From Wm Renton et al for opening alley in Block 7 of Maynards plat. Referred to the Committee on Streets and Street Improvements

From Union Water Co. for the right to lay waterpipes in the Streets. Rejected

From Mary M. Miller protesting against paying a tax for Washington Street sidewalk ord 326. Referred to the Committee on Streets and Street Improvements

From S. F. Hoole for a partial payment on a/c of Cherry Street sidewalk.

From Sarah Writh [?] protesting against the payment of taxes for Pine + 9th sts sidewalk ord 281. Laid on the table

Reports Rec'd From Survyor showing final statement of work done on Jackson Street Improvement. Adopted

Committees Reports Rec'd From Streets + Street Improvements recommending the granting of the petition of J. F. McNaught et al for the Improvement of Main Street. Adopted + Attorney instructed to submit an Ordinance therefor.

From Streets + Street Improvements approving the street Commissioners Report. Adopted.

granting of the petition of Smith + Fanar [?] et al for a gas lamp foot of Main Street. Adopted + lamp ordered

From Finance rejecting the petition of J. B. Huntley for refunding taxes. Adopted + petition denied

From Finance approving Treasurers monthly report + also reports on King + 7th Streets sidewalks. Adopted + balances in 7th Street sidewalk fund $55.77 + balance in King Street sidewalk Fund $61.30 are ordered be transferred to City Fund.

From Judiciary + Legislative approving Clerks report Adopted

From Committee on Harbor + Wharves approving report of Harbor Master. Adopted

From Fire + Water supply reporting comparative estimates of a Brick + Wooden Engine House in Columbia Street. Adopted

Ordered that the Committee on Public Buildings, Property + Grounds be + they are hereby instructed to solicit plans + specifications for a Brick Engine House on Columbia Street property.

Licenses Granted The following applications having been approved by the Committee on Licenses + Revenue are ordered issued, towit: John Miles Grocery Robert Halm Grocery French + Co Wholesale + Retail G. Burian Grocery, Pigeon Hole + Pool table Charles Anderson Retail

Claims Paid. The following claims having been duly audited by the Council are ordered paid by Warrants drawn on the funds and in the amounts following towit:

Road Fund Back Co. Whitmore freight on stone-iron pipe no.(185) $188.20 P. Quigley graveling streets 163 100.

Ordinances Received The Judiciary + Legislative Committee submit an Ordinance entitled "To provide for grading a portion of Main Street in the City of Seattle and for the construction of a sidewalk in said Street." Laid over

The Judiciary + Legislative Committee submit an Ordinance entitled "To provide for grading portions of Washington and Second Streets in the City of Seattle, and for the construction of sidewalks in said Streets." Thereupon after due consideration said ordinance is adopted upon the following vote towit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Collins, Gasch, McDonald, + Rasin. Against adoption none.

Miscallaneous and now the Surveyor submits the Plans, Specifications + Estimates for grading of, and the construction of sidewalks on both sides of James Street from the Eastside of Front Street to the center of the alley between Front + Second Streets under ordinance No. 365. After due examination the same are approved + ordered filed

And now the Surveyor submits the Plans, Specifications + Estimates for grading of and the construction of side walks on both sides of Cherry Street from the East side of Front Street to the center of the alley between Front + Second Streets under Ordinance No. 3654. After due examination the same are approved + ordered filed.

and Estimates for grading of and the construction of sidewalks on both sides of Columbia Street, from the Eastside of Front Street to the center of the alley between Front + Second Streets under Ordinance No. 354. After due examination the same are approved + ordered filed.

And now the Surveyor submits the Plans, Specifications and Estimates for grading of and the construction of sidewalks on both sides of Spring street, from the Eastside of Front Street to the center of the alley between Front + Second Streets under Ordinance No. 365. After due examination the same are approved + ordered filed.

And now the Surveyor submits the Plans, Specifications and Estimates for grading of and the construction of sidewalks on both sides of Spring Street, from the alley between 3rd and 4th Streets to the Westside of Seventh Street under Ordinance No. 365 After due examination the same are approved + ordered filed.

And now the Council proceed to consider the matter of settling with E. W. Ren Contractor on Engine House construc ted under Ordinance No 285, thereupon H. Pierce Esq appeared on behalf of Mr Ren + protests + objects to the payment of the claim + lien of the Commercial Lumber + Manufacturing Co. against the said Engine House.

Ordered that the order heretofore made and entered of date February 5 1883 allowing the sums of $1533.75 + $127.00 to be paid to E. W. Ren be + is hereby rescinded + vacated

Ordered that the Clerk be + is hereby instructed to advertise for bids for the construction of the Madision Streets Sewer in accordance with plans + specification to be hereafter filed

Ordered that the Chief of Police be + is hereby instructed to Have the windows cleaned + blinds hung in new city Engine House
