503 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE July 9/84 Be it remembered that on this the 9th day of July 1884 the Common Councl of the city of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to adjournment The following officers are present to wit: His Honor the mayor H G Struve and councilmen B F Day, Geo W Harris, Chas Mc Donald, B L Northrup, Otto Ranke, U M Rasin & F W Wusthoff Petitioins Rec'd From John H Hummell et al for opening Broadway Street between Mill and Madison Streets. Referred to Street Comtee Communications Rec'd From Surveyor submitting an estimate of the cost of planking foot of Marion Street Committee Reports Rec'd From Fire Comtee rejecting the petition of Lowman & Cobb et al of an Ordinance preventing the firing of fire crackers. Adopted From Cemetary Comtee submittins a propsal of the City Sexton to remove bodies from Odl Cemetary. Ordered filed Licenses Ordered Issued Ordered that license be issued as follows to wit: Frank Lessman for Grocery license for 3 months from July 13 1884 Shaw & Alger for Retail license for 3 months from July 9 Weir & Love for Retail license for 3 months from July 10 John McCary for Retail license for 3 months from July 16 Ordinances The atty submits an Ordinance entitled "For the improvement of a portion of Fifth Street" after due consideration said ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Day, Harris, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke, Rasin & Wusthoff Against adoption none The Atty submits an Ordinance entitled "To amned Sections 4 and 5 of Ordinance No 246 entitled 'an ordinance fixing the pay fees and compensation of the city officers of the City of Seattle'" After due consideration said ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Day, Harris, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke, Rasin Wusthoff Against adoption none The Atty submits an Ordinance entitled "For fixing the rate of Levy and

504 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE July 9/84 ' providing for the collection of assessments to pay of the cost and expenses of Condemnation of property for the extension of Madison Street under Ordinance No 276" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Day, Harris, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke, Rasin & Wusthoff Against adoption none An Ordinance is submitted entitles "An Ordinance to amend Ordinance No 383 entitled "An Ordinance establishing certain grades in the City of Seattle", After due consideration said ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Day, Harris, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke & Wusthoff Against adoption none The Cemetary Comtee submits an ORdinace entitled "An Ordinance for the purpose of converting Seattle Cememtary into a Pubi Park" after due consideration asid Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Day, Harris, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke & Wusthoff Against adoption none An Ordinance is submitted entitled "A speial Ordinance appropriating money to apy audited bills. Adopted upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Day, Harris, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke & Wusthoff Against adoption none Claims Paid fire fund R C Smith Care of Hook & Ladder apparatus No 402 $20. Ordered that a Warrant be drawn favor G Kellogg as Chief of Fire Dept in the sum of $20.00 with which to purchase coal Miscellaneous And now the Council proceeds to elect the Chief Engineer of the fire Dept as provided by ordinance No 536; thereupon Wm Campbell is elected to fill said Office for the term provided by law. And now the coucil proceeds to examine & Equalized the assessment Roll for Bell Street Improvement Grade Ordinance No 555; Thereupon after due examination the said Roll being found to be Correct in every particular & no complaints having been made as to any assessnent therein. It is ordered that said assessment Rolls be & is hereby approved

505 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE July 9/84 Ordered that a contract be entered into with O C SHorey on his bid for removing bodies from the old cemetary as asson after the ordinance heretofore passed condemning the said cemetary shall take effect & as consent of all owners of lots therein can be abtained And now the surveyor submits the profile of certain proposed changes in the grade elevations on Commercial and Mill Streets; Whereupon after due examination said profile is approved and the Attorney is hereby instructed to submit an ordinance providing for such changes and another Ordinance providing for the grading and planking of certain portions of said Commercial & Mill Streets. And now the Surveyor submits the specification for a sewer in Madison Street; thereupon after due examination the same are approved And now the surveyor submits the plans & Specifications for the purposes grading of Fifth Street Between Battery and Vine Street; after due examination the same are approved And now the chief of the Fire Department submits the plans & specifications for Fire plugs; thereupon the same are approved And now the Council proceeds to open & Consider the bids for furnishing of said fire pugs; which bids are as follows, to wit: Seattle Iron Works per plug $34. Washtn Iron Works per plug $80. Ordered that the contract be awarded to the Seattle Iron Works on their said bid Ordered that the Surveyor be & is hereby instructed to plat the new Cemetary so far as cleared.
