H/7/1917 -2- 277 nure. If you have a new strawberry bed work it over every week: if an old one, still more work is required. Celery should be set out this month in rich earth. Keep it well watered and worked forcing it along as much as possible. Keep the flower garden as free from weeds as possible. plant seeds of perennials, pinks, snap-dragons canterberry - bells. phlox, fox glove A long row of scarlet sage with white burr poppies as a back ground is gay. Cannas, geraniums and nasturtiums should be planted abundantly, Thin Lima beans and when they get to the top of the poles nip off the ends. Put down cuttings of geraniums and roses.

Exhibits Were excellent Good heads of cabbage from five places and new potatoes, ripe tomatoes, from two; peas, beets, beans, rhubarb, onions carrots, salsify, parsnips, radishes chard, lettuce, cauliflower and cymblings. The fruits were, apples gooseberries, raspberries, black currants red currants and cherries. A beautiful display of flowers, Roses sweet -peas yucca amaryllis etc.

Questions 1 How thick plant soup beans? About like snap beans.

2 When do moles work? One man says from 7 to 10. Another says from

3 How destroy poison ivy? Pull it up or apply kerosene 4 How treat blight on trumpet honey suckle Spray with Pyrox - for plant bed spray with lemon oil

5 Why does pink Hydrangea become blue? Probable changed condition of soil.

6 How trim currant bushes? Cut out old wood after bearing

7 Do you take suckers off sweet corn? Not many do tho it is said they weaken the plant if allowed to grow

8 How treat a heavy growth of strawberries? Chop out or mow off.

9 Cut off runners of Navy beans? No

10 Is it a good plan to plant beans to 10 run on Corn? Some like the practice

The garden was much admired Tomatoes so large they were accused of being artificial. All vegetables looked well, roses luxuriant other flowers in great variety

H/8/1917 -1- 279 Cloverly Aug 7th 1917

The meeting came to order in good time. The minutes were read and approved. 1st Reader. Anna Farquhar gave an article showing that Florists in New Orleans are ready to turn truck gardeners, and the firm Stecker V Co. stood ready to supply free seeds. 2nd Reader Sarah Kirk had an article on harvesting beans. Volunteer Alice Stabler read "Buddhism in Seattle." 2nd article "Grace for Gardens" a prayer. E. S. Iddings an article recommending Cayenne pepper for leaf eating pests, and English Sparrows that devour peas.

Forethought Sow turnip, kale, lettuce and spinach and in the Flower garden seeds of perennials. Continue the battle against weeds. Plant late cabbage for poultry. Keep celery worked

280 H/8/1917 -2quisit, Phlox very showy in many shades of red, pink and white, Zinnias and other flowers made a fine display

Questions

1 That do for black aphis on Nasturtiums? Spray with strong tobacco tea or snuff

2 Is it best to pinch the ends of the vines of Lima beans? Yes.

3. Is is well to cut back plox to make it bloom again? Yes, it makes a scattering bloom later.

4 Does the moon affect vegetation? No one in this society thinks it does

5 What do for lillies that do not look thrifly? Enrich the soil.

6 When will kale, planted now be ready to eat? Late fall or in the spring

7 Would kale do well sowed in corn patch? Yes

8 Is it too early to can tomatoes? No

9 Do many dry corn? Yes

10 What do with surplus apples now ? Send to market, or give to those who have none. Some of our neighbors have no early apples.

11 Is it too late to plant soup beans? Might try it and trust having late rain

We are advised to lift late cabbage a little with a spade to prevent burshing.

Wonderful Rhododendrons he saw on a recent visit to Buck Hill falls. Millions of them, and so very beautiful.

In our walk in the garden we found it luxuriant. A good variety of vegetables and all flourishing

The strawberry bed was in fine condition, clean and promising for next June.
