Late Dec 1918 Dearest Mother, Just a note to say that I am well and pappy and only for the utter lack of any mail from home I am satisfied. I have done quite a lot of thinking lately about my future and have decided that I am going to have a rest of about one month after this ordeal and then I will choose what looks best to me and what ever I do why I will see that all responsibility is lifted from thy shoulders. I am now in the evenings writing a history of my trip and much that I haven't told thee is coming out

Our life here is quiet and we are going to celebrate Xmas the same way. This of course will be the most quiet one that I will ever spend. Yesterday I had some patroling to do & it took me through some of this very dense forest, on my walk two tremendous jack rabbits hopped up and sure ran. 4 deer were standing eating right near where I was walking that makes ten that we have seen
