Jaffa 3rd July 1867

Dear Madam

Your favour of the 16th May duly came to hand & I willingly undertook to perform the commission with which you intrusted me.

I found the burial ground as you describe. The walls & door are in good preservation & the key is kept by W. S. Metzlerof this town. Vegetation has run wild within the enclosure, the ground being covered with rank grass & entangled vine. The graves & enscriptions are in very good preservation. The following is an exact copy of the latter:

[left column] In memory of F. W. Grossteinbeck Born in Prussia May 9th 1821 Died in Jaffa. Jan. 12, 1858 Aged 36 years He was shot at his own door by arab robbers "Those that sleep in Jesus will he bring with him" Thess. IV 14

[right column] In memory of C S Minor from Phila, U. S. Industrial missionary to the Jews Died Nov. 6 1855 Aged 46 years "She hath done what she could."

I enclose a little olive branch blucked from a bush growing at the head of your lamented husband's grave. The vine leaves were from a wild vine growing over the other grave.

Trusting I have acted in accordance with your wishes. I remain Dear Madam Yours very truly Hermann Loewenthal U.S.[V.?] Consul

To Mrs. Mary E. Grossteinbeck c/o G. L. Boyd No 1705 North 13th Street. Philadelphia Pa
